A Storybook Stay at Château du Sureau in Oakhurst, California

Tucked into the Sierra foothills just outside the gateway to Yosemite National Park sits one of the most charming and romantic boutique properties we’ve ever experienced: Château du Sureau.

During our October travels through California, Claudia and I spent the night of October 7, 2025, enjoying the elegance, quiet beauty, and culinary excellence that have made this French-inspired estate a hidden gem in the mountains above Oakhurst.

Our visit included a full tour of the property, several of the suites, dinner at the renowned restaurant on site, and a delightful French-style breakfast the next morning.

A Warm Welcome to a French Country Estate

From the moment you arrive at Château du Sureau, it feels as though you’ve stepped into the French countryside rather than the Sierra Nevada foothills.

The property is beautifully landscaped with gardens, stone paths, and elegant architecture that immediately set a tranquil tone. It’s a boutique property with a limited number of suites, which makes the entire experience feel intimate and exclusive.

We spent time exploring the grounds, including:

  • The peaceful walking paths winding through the gardens
  • The pool area, surrounded by greenery and shaded lounging spots
  • The spa, perfect for relaxing after a day exploring Yosemite
  • Several charming outdoor sitting areas that invite you to slow down and enjoy the scenery

The entire estate feels designed for relaxation, romance, and quiet luxury.

Our Stay in the Lavender Suite

For the evening, we stayed in the beautiful Lavender Suite, located on the second floor of the château.

The suite perfectly captures the romantic French aesthetic of the property. Soft lavender tones, elegant furnishings, and classic European décor create an atmosphere that feels both luxurious and welcoming.

Highlights of the suite included:

  • A spacious bedroom with elegant antique-style furnishings
  • Large windows overlooking the property
  • A comfortable sitting area perfect for relaxing after dinner
  • Beautiful decorative touches that feel straight out of Provence

The Lavender Suite felt like a place where you could easily spend a few days unwinding after exploring Yosemite.

Touring the Other Suites

One of the highlights of our visit was being able to tour several additional suites, each with its own unique personality and design.

During our walkthrough we explored:

  • Rosemary Suite
  • Elderberry Suite
  • Rosehip Suite
  • Thyme Suite

Each suite maintains the same classic French country style, but with its own color palette, layout, and charm. Some feature fireplaces, larger sitting areas, or different views of the grounds.

Our video tour (included in this post) walks through each of these suites so you can experience them for yourself.

Dinner at The Elderberry House

One of the true highlights of our stay at Château du Sureau was an unforgettable evening at its acclaimed restaurant, the Elderberry House. Known for its refined European-inspired cuisine and intimate atmosphere, the restaurant delivers a dining experience that feels both elegant and warmly personal—perfectly in keeping with the château’s storybook charm.

The restaurant is widely known as one of the best fine dining experiences in the Yosemite region, and the meal absolutely lived up to its reputation. The atmosphere is elegant yet comfortable, with attentive service and beautifully prepared dishes that highlight seasonal ingredients. Dining here felt like the perfect complement to the château experience—refined, memorable, and wonderfully relaxed.

We began the evening with the restaurant’s signature cocktail, the Autumn Moon—a beautifully balanced blend of gin, pear brandy, vanilla, chai, crème de cacao, and sweet vermouth. The drink was aromatic and layered, with warm spice notes from the chai and vanilla complemented by the subtle fruitiness of the pear brandy. It was the perfect introduction to the culinary journey ahead.

Our dinner unfolded as a thoughtfully curated three-course menu, beginning with a delightful chef’s treat: a silky Japanese savory custard. This delicate amuse-bouche set the tone for the evening—light, comforting, and rich with umami flavor.

For the appetizer, we enjoyed a beautifully plated ahi tuna crudo paired with melon, cucumber, and dill. The dish was refreshingly bright, with the sweetness of the melon and the crisp cucumber balancing the buttery texture of the tuna. The dill added a subtle herbal note that tied everything together perfectly.

The main course featured expertly seared scallops served with shiitake mushrooms, turnip, and a deeply flavorful mushroom dashi. The scallops were perfectly caramelized on the outside while remaining tender and sweet inside. The earthy shiitake mushrooms and umami-rich dashi created a wonderful depth of flavor that elevated the dish into something truly memorable.

For dessert, we were treated to a delicate plum bavarois accompanied by goat milk and sorrel. The creamy texture of the bavarois paired beautifully with the subtle tang of the goat milk, while the sorrel added a bright, slightly citrusy note that balanced the sweetness of the plum.

Just when we thought the evening had reached its perfect conclusion, a final treat arrived: an assortment of petite fours, a classic and elegant way to end the meal.

Each course was not only visually stunning but thoughtfully composed, showcasing the culinary artistry that has made the Elderberry House such a destination for fine dining in the Yosemite region.

A Perfect French Morning: Le Petit Déjeuner

The following morning we enjoyed Le Petit Déjeuner in the château’s charming breakfast room.

This delightful breakfast featured:

  • Fresh pastries
  • Seasonal fruit
  • Coffee and juices
  • A beautifully prepared hot breakfast

The setting was warm and intimate, making it the perfect way to start the day before continuing our California journey.

Final Thoughts

Our stay at Château du Sureau was one of the most memorable boutique hotel experiences of our California travels.
Between the elegant suites, the incredible dinner at The Elderberry House, and the relaxing French breakfast the next morning, it felt like we had discovered a little slice of Provence in the Sierra Nevada.

A stay at Château du Sureau also makes for a wonderful base for exploring the dramatic landscapes of Yosemite National Park. One of the most memorable day trips during our visit was the scenic drive to Glacier Point, located about 1.5 hours from the hotel. From this breathtaking overlook, we were treated to one of the most iconic views in the park—an unobstructed panorama of Half Dome rising majestically above the valley, surrounded by towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls. With the clear mountain air and sweeping vistas, we could even see tiny figures of hikers making their way up the cables on Half Dome, a remarkable reminder of the scale and grandeur of Yosemite. Nearby waterfalls and the vast expanse of the valley floor made the entire scene feel like a living postcard, and it’s a perfect excursion for guests who want to combine a luxurious stay with one of California’s most spectacular natural landscapes.
